Treffry takes its name from one of the most significant Cornish rowing gigs associated with Newquay Harbour and the town’s maritime heritage.
Built in 1838 by William Peters for the Treffry Company of Newquay, Treffry is widely regarded as one of the most important gigs in Cornish rowing history. Upon completion, William Peters reportedly considered Treffry to be his finest gig, and its design became the blueprint for modern Cornish pilot gigs that continue to be built and raced today.
Named in honour of this historic vessel, Treffry reflects Harbour Hotel’s close connection to Newquay Harbour and the generations of maritime tradition that continue to shape life along the waterfront.
