The Story Behind Fly
Fly takes its name from one of Newquay Harbour’s traditional Cornish rowing gigs and reflects the deep maritime heritage that continues to shape life around the harbour today.
Built in 1993 by Ralph Bird of Devoran, Fly was introduced to replace the Unity gig and remains part of Newquay’s proud rowing tradition. The gig is named after the historic Fly Cellars, located near the North Quay of Newquay Harbour, where rowing races were often started when tidal conditions required an alternative starting point.
The room’s name celebrates this connection to Newquay’s waterfront history and the generations of rowers, fishermen and harbour workers who have helped shape the character of the harbour over the years.
