The Story Behind Good Intent
Good Intent takes its name from one of Newquay Harbour’s traditional Cornish rowing gigs, reflecting the hotel’s close connection to the town’s maritime heritage.
Built by Tom Chudleigh and completed in 1974 on St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly, Good Intent was created as a replica of the historic Treffry gig, one of the most influential vessels in Cornish rowing history.
The gig is also known for an extraordinary achievement in July 2003, when it was rowed from Newquay to Courtmacsherry in Ireland, demonstrating the endurance, determination and spirit that have long been associated with Cornwall’s rowing traditions.
Today, Good Intent remains part of Newquay’s rich maritime story and serves as inspiration for the room that proudly carries its name.
