The Story Behind Active

Cornish Rowing Gig - Active

Active takes its name from one of Newquay Harbour’s traditional Cornish rowing gigs and reflects the rich maritime heritage that continues to define life around the harbour today.

Built by Tom Chudleigh in 1974 on St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly, Active was the first replica of the historic Treffry gig, whose design became the blueprint for modern Cornish pilot gigs. The vessel takes its name from the historic Active Cellars, located above the North Quay at Newquay Harbour.

Today, Active remains part of the town’s proud rowing tradition, helping to preserve the heritage and community spirit that have long been associated with Newquay’s waterfront.
